Francesca’s Bar is more than just a neighbourhood watering hole on High Street in Northcote—it’s a cultural landmark. Over the years, it has built a reputation for its welcoming atmosphere, live music, and unforgettable events. As a long-time favourite of locals and the wider Melbourne crowd, the bar needed a digital home that matched its iconic in-person vibe. Enter our team.
The original website, although functional once upon a time, had become outdated. Pages were slow to load, the layout wasn’t responsive, and the overall design no longer represented the energetic spirit of Francesca’s. Our mission was clear: revitalise the bar’s digital identity through a new website, better UX, and an SEO strategy that ensured Francesca’s stood out on Google.
With a tight timeline and a deep emotional connection to the brand (our Creative Director Al is a close friend of the owner), this project was personal. We dove into discovery, collaborated closely with the Francesca’s team, and delivered a solution that brought new energy to their digital presence.

Web Design
Francesca’s Bar needed more than just a good-looking website
They needed a new experience that would delight customers online as much as it does in person. We aimed to mirror the bar’s vibrant, inclusive personality and facilitate easier access to bookings, menus, and event info.
We designed the site with a mobile-first mindset, ensuring a seamless browsing experience across all devices. The homepage acts as a hub for all key interactions: OpenTable reservations, quick access to food & drink menus, and real-time Instagram feed updates to reflect the dynamic happenings at Francesca's.
Visual Storytelling: Colourful, high-contrast layouts and lively imagery to convey the bar’s unique atmosphere.
Brand Cohesion: Fonts, colours, and copy carefully crafted to reflect Francesca’s personality and heritage.
User Experience First: Prioritising easy access to key features for a seamless visitor journey.
Web Development
Behind Francesca's slick new site lies a powerful and secure development framework designed for performance and longevity.
We used WordPress paired with a premium page builder for flexible content creation. WP Rocket was implemented to supercharge load times, while Cloudflare added a layer of bot protection and caching to keep the site secure and fast.
- OpenTable Booking Widget: Prominently featured on the homepage, allowing users to reserve a table within seconds.
- Mr. Yum Integration: Direct links to order from the digital menu for a smooth in-bar ordering experience.
- Functions Form: A bespoke form tailored for event inquiries, covering everything from headcount to event type.
- What’s On Page: A blog-style section to keep regulars informed about gigs, trivia nights, and more.
Contact Page & FAQs: Designed for ease, offering everything from parking tips to custom enquiry forms.
Performance optimisation was a major focus. The previous site suffered from long load times and server instability. We addressed this with a combination of lightweight theme architecture, CDN support via Cloudflare, and intelligent caching.
SEO Search Engine Optimisation
Once the new website was in place, the next priority was getting eyes on it.
Our SEO strategy focused on local dominance—ensuring Francesca’s Bar would pop up any time someone searched for a great bar in Northcote.
Audit & Keyword Planning
We kicked off with a comprehensive audit, identifying broken links, thin content, and meta issues. From there, we performed keyword research centred on search intent and local relevance. High-value terms like “wine bars Northcote” and “High St Northcote bars” became our targets.
On-Page & Technical SEO
Every page was optimised for keywords and speed. We ensured headers, alt text, and structured data were in place. Technical fixes like redirect clean-ups, crawl error resolutions, and image optimisation were completed early on.
Google Business Profile & Local Listings
We fine-tuned Francesca’s Google Business Profile, adding event photos, menus, and ensuring NAP consistency across the web. With mobile search driving the majority of engagement (over 60%), we focused heavily on mobile visibility and Maps performance.
Results
- Average Keyword Position: Improved to 20, with “wine bars Northcote” breaking into the top 10.
- Total Organic Keywords: Increased to 95, including 6 in the top rankings.

Revamping Francesca’s Bar’s digital presence was a project close to our hearts. Through intuitive design, enhanced user experience, and strong SEO foundations, we helped this Northcote icon reconnect with existing patrons and charm a new generation of customers. The new website doesn’t just serve as an online brochure—it’s a dynamic extension of the venue itself.
As a result, Francesca’s has seen improvements in traffic, rankings, bookings, and brand visibility. It’s proof that when you combine creativity with technical precision, magic happens.
