What is RSS? What does it have to do with Blogs?

Axdigital RSS Feed

So, what is RSS all about?

We often get asked this so that’s one of the reasons why we decided to pull this blog post together; hopefully you’ll leave this page fully informed and up to speed on all things RSS!

People just don’t realise the full power of RSS and often completely miss it is terms of your website’s subscription options.

But getting back to the title…what’s RSS?

Well, it’s not new; it’s an oldie but a goodie and it’s used by millions of users throughout the world to keep appraised of the latest content on their favourite sites. In the bad old days you had to bookmark your favourite sites; you’d have them ferreted away in your bookmarks/favourites section where you’d invariably forget about them and miss out on lots of juicy content.

When you bookmarked, it was down to you to do all other work, all of the remembering and all of the clicking. It was a nightmare as soon as you had more than a few websites bookmarked.

And what happens if you remember to check your favourite sites but there’s nothing new on there? You’ve wasted your time again that’s what! And this where RSS comes in…

RSS changes the game

RSS allows you to know exactly when your favourite sites have been updated; you find out pretty much immediately and can help you get there even quicker! RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (which should make perfect sense by now!) and you’ll see lots of sites referring to their RSS feeds and their “news feed”; they’ll want you to subscribe to it.

So you now get lots of great content in a speedy and timely manner; but it doesn’t arrive in your inbox like an email. It is delivered to your RSS reader of choice every time there is a new update.

Simple

It really is simple to set up. You don’t have to be technically savvy and once it’s done, it’s done for good (or at least for as long as the website is up and running). So if you love your news, can’t get enough sport updates or need to stay abreast of the latest political developments, RSS is a great way to keep yourself informed.

If you’re a website owner or developer, hopefully you can now see the huge potential of RSS feeds. Every website needs one; your customers’ needs one, so what are you waiting for? Get in touch today!
